Combidex, in my opinion, is in the top 3 advances in oncology in my
life time.
I have been in cancer medicine since 1963, starting out in immunology
research at the U of Chicago as a medical student. I have seen the
advances of CT and MRI and the breakthroughs in anti-emetic therapy
and growth factors such as Procrit, Neupogen, Leukine, & Neulasta to
support the cancer patient. I was involved in some of this research
as well as in the development of the Port-A-Cath to deliver
chemotherapy not only as an outpatient but to decrease the anxiety
that patients feel during the search for venous access to deliver
potentially life-changing therapy.
Combidex is a highly accurate way to determine the existence of
metastatic disease in lymph nodes with an accuracy in the 90% range
that makes CT and bone scan look prehistoric, not to mention the
billions of dollars in wasted healthcare dollars.
In discussing the Combidex I feel akin to Semmelweiss when he
realized that washing ones hands before tending to the delivery of a
pregnant woman could make the difference between life and death
insofar as childbed fever.
Combidex accurately determines STATUS and it is impossible to select
an intelligent strategy without knowing to the best of our ability
the patient's biological truth-- his or her status. The fact that
Combidex is still not commercially available is only a testimony to
the lack of unity of the patient community. In the world of PC
(prostate cancer), BC (breast cancer), LC/MS/MS (lung cancer) and
other solid tumor patients there should be mass protests about the
criminality of not having this SIMPLE iron compound available as a
contrast agent to be used with pre-existing MRI equipment. I would
go on record to state that the lack of Combidex in our country is
just another example of how we are moving right down the road to
becoming more and more like a 3rd world country.
Our humanity lies in our human unity. And, our ability to make
meaningful changes in our lives will only come about when we, homo
sapiens, "sentient man", work together as a planetary people to fix
the ills of our world. Until that time, we will stumble and fall a
heck of a lot more, and prematurely lose our loved ones. The lack of
availability of Combidex in the USA and elsewhere should be a call to
arms in every PC, BC, LC support group worldwide.

that matter." MLK

Dr. Strum and readers
Please be advised, according to Dr. Joseph Bender , of AMAG
Pharmaceuticals , Combidex is no longer being manufactured. Although
I am fighting the PCa fight, my 55 year old brother has stage 3
melanoma , he is participating in a clinical trial at NIH but I was
hoping to send him for Combidex in the Netherlands, but according to
an email I received from Dr. Bender it doesn't look good for Combidex future.
I read all your posts, and really hope we can find other dedicated
oncologist that can take up your mantle but, that will be hard.
Thank you for all your hard work.
